Study: Identifying ingredients supporting a "microbiome-friendly" claim

ReportsBeauty & Personal Care

A study conducted in partnership with BYOME LABS

The skin microbiome is now a key focus in skincare, with consumers embracing a holistic approach that supports skin health at its root. This fast-growing trend is driving innovation across beauty categories. In response, IMCD Beauty & Personal Care and BYOME LABS have conducted a study to evaluate how specific cosmetic ingredients interact with the skin’s microbiome composition.

Which ingredients have been tested?

We tested the impact of ingredients widely recognized for their anti-aging and hydrating properties: Sodium Hyaluronate*, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate* and Glycerin.

How have these ingredients been tested?

They have been tested alone and in formulation on 9 major strains via BYOME LAB's in-vitro biofilm testing methodology. Products have been applied on biofilms and strains variations have been measured after 4 hours of incubation.

Other ingredients composing the formulation (preservative, emollient (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride*) and emulsifier (Batyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Lecithin, Stearic Acid, Tocopherol*)) as well as the formulation base itself, have also been tested to check their behavior towards the skin microbiome.
All ingredients have been tested at their usual concentrations in cosmetic products.

*These ingredients are part of IMCD portfolio and are subject to country-specific availability. Check which ones are available in your country in the "Related Products" box!

Which microorganisms have been studied?

Our 9 selected strains fall into 4 key groups of microorganisms:

  • Staphylococcus genus: This group includes Staphylococcus epidermidis, a beneficial species known to stimulate keratinocyte renewal and boost ceramide production. Staphylococci are key players in the skin’s barrier and immune defense.
  • Cutibacterium genus: This group includes Cutibacterium acnes, a microbe famous for its role in sebum metabolism and maintaining skin pH. Certain strains are linked to acne, while others may help keep skin balanced.
  • Corynebacterium genus: Like staphylococci, these bacteria contribute to the skin’s protective ecosystem and help maintain its natural balance.
  • Malassezia genus: A genus of yeasts that influences skin pH. While part of the normal flora, some species are associated with conditions such as atopic dermatitis or seborrheic dermatitis.
